Research Interests

sociology of migration, irregular migration, externalisation of border management, migrant incorporation, social and public policy, the informal labour market, youth studies and gender studies.
I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations and Department of Sociology at Koç University since 2016. I am also a member of the executive board of the Migration Research Center at Koç University. My primary research interests include power, inequalities and contestations in relation to different aspects of international mobility. My work therefore is largely informed by sociology of migration, critical security studies and global governance. My book entitled The Governance of International Migration: Irregular Migrants’ Access to Right to Stay in Turkey and Morocco (Amsterdam University Press), compares irregular migration regimes in relation to externalization of EU migration and border policies, from the perspective of state and non-state actors. The book also explores patterns of migrant incorporation in Turkey and Morocco. My current research, on local integration in different districts of Istanbul focuses on the question of integration and social cohesion at the level of local governance. I am also starting a new research on migration-development nexus as part of a EU-wide consortium funded with Horizon 2020 framework. I have published in peer-reviewed journals including Geopolitics, New Perspectives on Turkey, Geografie, Migration and Development also in peer-reviewed journals in Turkish such as Toplum ve Bilim.
