ResearchOur part time faculty member and also an Anamed 2019-2020 Post-Doctoral Fellow Dr. Semih Çelik’s Project offer titled “A Contribution to Debates on Commercialization of Agriculture in the Ottoman Empire: Agricultural Production in Biga District, 1840-1860” received support approval under TUBİTAK-ARDEB’s “1001-Supporting Scientific and Technological Research Projects Program”. Assoc. Prof. Yonca Köksal of History Department, will be the consultant of the project.
A Contribution to Debates on Commercialization of Agriculture in the Ottoman Empire: Agricultural Production in Biga District, 1840-1860
This project aims to contribute to debates on commercialization of agriculture in the Ottoman Empire during the last quarter of the 19th century, based on hitherto unearthed archival material that provide detailed quantitative and qualitative information. To that end, it scrutinizes agricultural input, output, and production relations in Biga District, in north-western Anatolia, thanks to its geographic and climatic attributes, and to the abundant and exceptional archival evidence on agricultural production in the district. By doing so, the project aims to contribute not only to Ottoman economic history literature, but also to the emerging fields of environmental history and agricultural history in the Ottoman Empire.
John Whitney Hall book prize
Dr. Aiko Takeuchi-Demirci in the Sociology Department has received a John Whitney Hall book prize from the AAS (Association for Asian Studies). Her book is titled “Contraceptive Diplomacy: Reproductive Politics and Imperial Ambitions in the United States and Japan” (Stanford University Press, 2018).
